DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY

 

OVERVIEW

The Department of Psychiatry teaches clinical students at 500 Level. It relies heavily on biological and scientific basis of modern psychiatry and teaches all aspects of modern psychiatry to include modern aspect of neurological medicine and molecular biology as it is applied to psychiatric research.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course in Psychiatry the student would be able to

1.                   Understand modern definition of psychiatry and psychiatric ailments.

2.                   Appreciate the differences between biological and social psychiatry and place maximum emphasis on modern biological psychiatry.

3.                   Perform simple and complex psychiatric examination and make diagnosis at the same time as prescribe management of psychiatric ailments.

4.                   Understand the computer uses in modern psychiatry.

TEACHING & LEARING METHODS

The use of lectures given by chalk and power point. Also tutorials, seminars and workshops

EVALUATION

Psychiatry is examined in the last 5th MBBS examination before qualification. It is tested using MCQ, essays and clinical cases.
