MBBS EXAMINATIONS

REGULATIONS FOR PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATIONS IN MEDICINE (MBBS)

1.  PREAMBLE

These Regulations are not exhaustive. They are intended to supplement the University regulations or to replace those sections of the University regulations which do not apply to professional examinations in the Faculty.

2.  EXAMINATION - DEFINITION

"Professional Examinations" are defined as examinations held at the end of approved courses of study in the Faculty of Medical sciences as part of a professional degree or qualification in Medicine, Dentistry and allied fields of study.

3.  GENERAL REGULATIONS FOR THE CONDUCT OF PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATIONS

(a)  Examinations for a Professional Degree, Diploma or Certificate to be awarded by the University in the Faculty of Medical Sciences shall be conducted in accordance with:-

(b)  All Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates are awarded by the University under the acts establishing the University of Jos, as regulated by Senate.

4.  CONDITIONS FOR ADMISSION TO PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION

In  order to qualify for admission to any professional examination a candidate must:-

(a)  be duly registered;

(b)  follow an approved course of study for a prescribed period;

(c)  pay any fees prescribed by Senate;

(d)  satisfy the attendance requirements of the Faculty, viz:

(e)  Students must apply to enter each professional examination and produce evidence in the form of a document signed by the Head of Department or unit that has fulfilled the attendance requirements. The final decision for a student to attend an examination shall be with the Board of Studies and subject to appeal to Senate.

(f)  Comply with any additional professional requirements prescribed by the Faculty.

5.  GRADINGS FOR PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION

(a)  Unless otherwise directed by the Faculty Board of Examiners (as in GUIDELINES FOR EXAMINERS), for the Second and subsequent Professional Examinations, grades shall be awarded as follows:-

(b)  A distinction may be awarded in a subject where the candidate has attained an aggregate mark of 70% or more, at the first attempt.

6.  APPOINTMENT OF EXAMINERS

  (a)  For all Professional Examinations, there shall be:-

  (b) Internal Examiners

(i)  For Second and subsequent Professional Examinations, Internal Examiners shall be senior members of academic staff of the University with the rank of Senior Lecturer, Reader or Professor.

(ii)  The Head of each Department shall be the Chief Examiner in that subject area, and chair each departmental Board of Examiners.

(c)  External Examiners shall be distinguished scholars in their field of competence, and shall not have been a full time academic member of the University of Jos during the two academic years immediately proceeding the proposed date of appointment as an external examiner.

(d) An overall Chief Examiner for each professional examination shall be appointed by rotation in every examination who must be of rank of Senior Lecture or above.

7.  COMPOSITION OF THE FACULTY BOARD OF EXAMINERS

(a)  For each Professional Examination, there shall be a Faculty Board of Examiners which shall consist of:-

(i)  The Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences as Chairman

(ii)  Heads of Departments presenting students for that examination;

(iii)  The Internal Examiner from the appropriate Department;

(iv)  The External Examiners appointed by Senate for each subject area.

(b)  The composition of the Board of Examiners for the First Professional Examination is defined in the special regulations for the at examination.

8.  COMPOSITION OF THE DEPARTMENTAL BOARD OF EXAMINERS

For each Professional Examination, there shall be a Departmental Board of Examiners under the Chairmanship of the head of Department, which shall consist of all the Internal Examiners and the External Examiner(s) in that department, where they are appointed under the Regulations.

9.  DUTIES OF DEPARTMENTAL BOARD OF EXAMINERS

The duties of the Departmental Boards of Examiners shall be to:-

(a)  prepare draft examination papers from the questions submitted to the head of Department;

(b)  transmit moderated draft examination papers to the Faculty Board of examiners for final compilation, printing and safe-keeping;

(c)  distribute examination scripts to the examiners fro marking;

(d)  prepare provisional pass and failure lists for consideration by the Faculty Board of examiners.

10.  DUTIES OF THE FACULTY BOARD OF EXAMINERS

The role of the Faculty Board of Examiners shall be to:

(a)  advise the Faculty Board on the format of any professional examination;

(b)  receive all examination questions from the Departmental Board of Examiners;

(c)  compile the Professional Examination papers;

(d)  determine what materials candidates may be required to take into Examination Hall;

(e)  compile final mark sheets;

(f)   prepare the Past and Referral lists of candidates for transmission to the Faculty Board of Medical Sciences;

(g)  publish Provisional Pass and Referral lists of candidates.

11.  THE FACULTY BOARD shall receive and consider for approval the Pass and Referral lists from the Faculty Board of Examiners and shall transmit these to Senate for ratification.

12.  REGULATIONS FOR THE FIRST MBBS EXAMINATION LEADING TO THE MBBS DEGREE 

ELIGIBILITY:  Candidates should:-

(i)  satisfy the entrance requirements to study for a degree in the Faculty of Medical Sciences and be duly registered;

(ii)  follow approved courses fro one academic year in the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Division of General Studies.

(b)  THE FIRST MBBS EXAMINATION leading to the MBBS degree in Medicine, will be taken at one sitting in June of each year.

(c)  FORMAT OF EXAMINATION

(i)  For the purposes of the First MBBS Examination the content of the various courses taken in the Departments of the Faculty of natural Sciences during the first year of study will be grouped together into the respective subject areas of :-

BIOLOGY

CHEMISTRY, AND

PHYSICS.

(ii)  The Examination shall consist of:-

(1)  One one-hour multiple choice paper,

(2)  One three-hour theoretical paper, and

(3)  One three-hour practical paper in each of the following subject areas:-

BIOLOGY

CHEMISTRY, AND

PHYSICS.

(iii)  The three papers shall contribute 30%, 40% and 30% respectively of the total marks in each subject.

(d)  TO PASS THE FIRST MBBS EXAMINATION the candidate must score at least 40% in each subject and fro a distinction to be recorded in a subject the candidate must score an aggregate of 70% or more in that subject at the first attempt.

NOTE: for this examination the general University grading system shall apply.

(e)  REFERRAL IN THE FIRST MBBS EXAMINATION

(i)  Candidates who fail in one subject in June shall be required to repeat the First Professional Examination in that subject in September of the same year.

(ii)  Candidates who fail the repeat examination will be required to repeat all the first year courses and to sit the whole of the First MBBS Examination in the following JUNE.

(iii)  Candidates who fail in two or three subjects in June shall not be eligible for a repeat and shall be required to repeat all first year courses and sit the whole of the First Professional Examination in the following JUNE.

(iv)  Candidates repeating the course who fill one or more subjects in June may repeat the examination in the subjects they have failed in the following September.

(v)  Candidate who fail to satisfy the examiners in any subject at the fourth attempt will be required to withdraw from the Faculty.

(f)  COMPOSITION OF THE BOARD OF EXAMINERS FOR THE FIRST MBBS EXAMINATION

The Board of Examiners of the First MBBS Examination shall consist of:-

(i)  The Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences as Chairman;

(ii  The Dean of eh Faculty of Medical Sciences as Deputy Chairman;

(iii) Two members of Academic Staff, from each subject area, appointed by the Faculty of Natural Sciences;

(iv)  Two members of academic staff appointed by the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

(g)  DUTIES OF THE BOARD of examiners of the First MBBS Examination are as defined in Section 10 of these Regulations.

(h)  GENERAL

    (i)  Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the General Studies Examination either in June or September may proceed with the courses for the Second Professional Examination and repeat the General Studies Examination in the following June.

(ii)  To proceed to the courses leading to the Second Professional Examination, students hall either have passed the First Professional Examination or have gained exemption from it, i.e. those that have qualified for entry into 200 level of the Faculty.

3.  REGULATIONS FOR THE SECOND PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION LEADING TO THE MBBS DEGREE

(a) ELIGIBILITY

Candidates who have passed the First Professional Examination of this University or who have gained exemption from it, will be allowed to proceed with courses leading to the Second Professional Examination.

(b)  THE SECOND PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION
(i) Eligible students in the Faculty of Medical Sciences will take the second Professional Examination after completing the required courses lasting five terms, as well as courses in the Division of General Studies.

(ii) The examination shall be taken at one sitting and will be held in March/April of each year.

(c)  FORMAT OF EXAMINATION

(i)  The examination will be in the following subjects:-

ANATOMY

BIOCHEMISTRY

PHYSIOLOGY, AND

INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNITY HEALTH

(ii)  The Examination will consist of :-

ANATOMY

BIOCHEMISTRY

PHYSIOLOGY, AND:

(iii)  Continuous assessment should form 40% of the total mark

(d) (i)  TO PASS THE EXAMINATION the candidate must score at least 50% in each subject and for a distinction to be recorded in a subject the candidate must score an aggregate of 70% or more in that subject.

(ii) Distinction in individual subjects may only be awarded to candidates who have passed the Second Professional Examination at the first attempt.

(iii)  Candidates must present themselves for the Second MBBS Examination in all subjects on the first occasion and those who satisfy the Examiners in the whole examination will be allowed to proceed to the Introductory Course for Clinical subjects.

(e)  REFERRAL IN THE SECOND MBBS EXAMINATION

(i)  Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in one or two major subjects in the March Examination shall be required to attend a revision course lasting six weeks and subsequently  repeat the examination in the referred subject (s) in May.

(ii)  Candidates who fail in the repeat examination shall repeat the year and repeat the whole of the Second Professional Examination the following March, provided that candidates who fail in the subsidiary subject in this examination may proceed with Clinical training , but will not be allowed to sit the 3rd MBBS Examination until they have satisfied the examiners in that subject.

(iii)  Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the major subjects at the first attempt shall be required to repeat the year and repeat the whole of the Second MBBS Examination the next year in March April.

(iv)  No student may proceed to the introductory course for clinical subjects unless he/she has passed in the three major subjects areas at the Second MBBS Examination.

(v)  Registered student who fail to satisfy all the requirements for proceeding to the Clinical Programme after he may examination of the subsequent year (i.e. nine terms after the FIRST MBBS EXAMINATION) shall be required to withdraw from the Faculty.

(f)  GENERAL

The Faculty of Medical Sciences at its discretion may recommend to the Academic Board that exemption be granted to a candidate from part of the Second MBBS Examination.

(g)  REGULATIONS GOVERNING HE GRANTING OF EXEMPTION TO PART OF THE SECOND MBBS EXAMINATION

(i)  Exemption from part of the Second MBBS Examination in Medical Sciences may be considered by the Faculty Board and recommended to the Academic Board for a student, provided that such a student has a first or upper second class honours degree in Anatomy, Biochemistry or Physiology awarded by an approved University.

(ii)  Procedure for the Application for an exemption :-

(iii)  Before commending an exemption to the Academic board, the Faculty Board shall satisfy itself that the course(s) previously taken and passed are :-

(1)  of an equivalent standard and content to those which would lead to the examination from which exemption is sought; and:

(2)  that the balance of the courses previously taken are equivalent to those offered in this University.

(iv)  The student who has been exempted from the examination in subject may be required to:

(1)  demonstrate in that subject, and /or

(2)  follow a course in research methods leading to a high degree in that subject.

REGULATIONS FOR THE THIRD MBBS EXAMINATION LEADING TO THE MBBS DEGREE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF JOS.

14 (a)  ELIGIBILITY

(i)  to be eligible to sit the Third MBBS Examination, candidates should have passed the Second MBBS Examination and attended courses in the relevant subjects for four semesters.

(ii)  The general regulations on eligibility to professional examinations shall also apply.

(b)  THE THIRD MBBS EXAMINATION

The Third MBBS Examination shall be held two times each year, in May and November. The candidates must present themselves for examination at the sitting which occurs not less than three semesters after the successful completion of the 2nd MBBS examination.

(c)  FORMAT OF THE THIRD PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION

         The examination will consist of three sections, namely:

            (i)  PATHOLOGY (which shall include Pathomorphology, Haematology, Microbiology, Chemical Pathology).  The examination in this section will consist of:

             (ii)   PHARMACOLOGY: the examination in this section will consist of :

(iii)  Continuous assessment will form 30-40% of the total marks but not in Paediatrics; where continuous assessment will form 25% of the marks for the theoretical examination.

(d)  PASS IN THE THIRD MBBS EXAMINATION

(i)  To pass the Third MBBS Examination in Pathology or Pharmacology, candidates must score an aggregate of 50% in the appropriate section.

(ii)  To obtain a distinction in any section a candidate must score 70% or more in that section.

(iii)  Distinction in an individual sections will only be awarded to candidates who have passed the Third MBBS Examination at the first attempt.

(e)  REFERRAL IN THE THIRD MBBS EXAMINATION

(i)  Candidates who fail to satisfy the Examiners in one or more or two sections may proceed with courses leading to the Final MBBS Examination and repeat the examination in the following November.  A referred student may be required before entry for a repeat examination to have undertaken such further study as may be approved by the head of the Department concerned.

(ii) Candidate who fail any section in the repeat examination shall repeat the year and repeat the whole of the Third MBBS Examination the following May.

(iii)  Candidates who fail to satisfy the Examiners in the two sections of the Third MBBS Examination in May, shall be requires o repeat the year and repeat the whole of the Third MBBS Examination the following May.

(iv)  Candidates who are requires to repeat the year shall attend courses as required by the Head of Departments and approved by Faculty Board.

(v)  Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners after the November repeat examination may take successive examinations starting the following May, at which May sitting candidates will be required to sit the whole of the Third MBBS Examination, when the examination regulation section e.(i) to (iv) will apply. No candidate may sit the Third Professional Examination thirty-six months or more after the first attempt, without the approval of Senate.

(f)  PUBLICATION OF RESULTS

Separate lists will be published in alphabetical order in May and November of candidates who:

(g)  THE BOARD OF EXAMINERS FOR THE THIRD MBBS EXAMINATION

REGULATIONS FOR THE FOURTH MBBS EXAMINATION

15(a)  ELIGIBILITY

(i)  Candidates who have passed the Third MBBS Examination and have attended the prescribed courses will be eligible to sit the Final MBBS Examination.

(ii)  Candidates who pass the 3rd MBBS Examination in the May repeat examination may not proceed to the Fourth MBBS until after a course of studies lasting one semester.

(iii)  The general regulation on eligibility to Professional Examinations shall also apply.

(b)  THE FOURTH MBBS EXAMINATION

(i)  The Fourth  MBBS Examination shall comprise the subjects :- Community Heath, Obstetrics and Gynaecology; Paediatrics.

The Fourth MBBS Examination shall be held twice each year in December and May.

Eligible candidates must present themselves for the Fourth MBBS Examination  in December immediately following completion of the Third MBBS Examination.

(c) FORMAT OF FOURTH MBBS EXAMINATION

The Examination shall consist of :

(A)  Community Health, comprising:

(B)  Obstetrics and Gynaecology, comprising:

(C) Paediatrics

(ii)  CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

Continuous assessment will form 25% of the marks for the theoretical examination except in Community Health where it will lform 30% of the total marks.

(d)  PASS IN FORTH PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION

(i)  To pass the Fourth MBBS Examination, candidates ms score an aggregate of 50% in each of the subjects of Community Health, Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology, as well as 50% in the Clinical Examination in Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

(ii)  DISTINCTION

(e)  PUBLICATION OF RESULTS

(i)  Separate lists will be published in December and May of candidates who:

(A)  have satisfied the examiners in the Fourth MBBS Examination , or

(B)  are referred in one or more subjects

(f)  REFERRAL IN THE FOURTH PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION

(i)  Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners at their first sitting in Fourth MBBS Examination of the December may repeat the examination in the following May in the subject or subjects in which they were referred.

ii)  Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in Fourth MBBS Examination of the May repeat Examination shall be required to present themselves for each successive examination in the subject(s) in which they have failed, provided that such candidates attend courses as designated by the appropriate department and approved by the Faculty Board.

(g)  BOARD OF EXAMINERS FOR THE FOURTH MBBS EXAMINATION

(i)  The Board of Examiners for the Fourth MBBS examination shall consist of:

(A)  The Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences as Chairman.

(B)  The Heads of the following departments

(a) Paediatrics

(b)  Obstetrics and Gynaecology

(c)  Community Health

(C)  One other member of academic staff from each department in gi(B).

(D)  All External Examiners appointed by Senate.

(ii)  The role of the Board of Examiners shall be to :-

(A) receive all examination questions

(B)  compile the Fourth Professional Examination papers

(C)  mark and moderate the script

(D)  receive viva voce reports

E)  compile final mark sheets

(F)  prepare the pass and referral lists of candidates for transmission to the Board of the Faculty of Medical Sciences

(h)  Faculty Board at the end of the Fourth MBBS Examination, shall receive the pass and referral lists from the Board of Examiners and shall compile for the approval of Senate.

b)  REGULATIONS FOR THE FIFTH MBBS EXAMINATION LEADING TO THE MBBS DEGREE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF JOS

(i)  The Fifth  MBBS Examination shall comprise the subjects :- Medicine and Surgery.

The Fifth MBBS Examination shall be held twice each year in June and December.

Eligible candidates must present themselves for the Fifth MBBS Examination  at the June examination at the end of the sixth year course, provided that no candidate ma present himself for this part of the examination who has not qualified for and sat the Fourth MBBS Examination.

(c) FORMAT OF FIFTH MBBS EXAMINATION

The Examination shall consist of :

(A) Medicine

(B)  Surgery

(ii)  CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

Continuous assessment will form 30-40% of the marks for the theoretical examination in Medicine and Surgery.

(d)  PASS IN FIFTH PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION

(i)  To pass the Fifth MBBS Examination, candidates must score an aggregate of 50% in each of the subjects of Medicine and Surgery as well as 50% in the Clinical Examinations in each subject.

(ii)  DISTINCTION

(e)  PUBLICATION OF RESULTS

(i)   List will be published in December and May of candidates who:

(f)  REFERRAL IN THE FIFTH PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION

(i)  Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners at their first sitting in Fifth MBBS Examination may repeat the examination the following December in the subject(s) in which they have failed. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in this repeat examination shall present themselves for each successive examination in the subject(s) in which they have failed provided that such candidates attend courses as designated by the appropriate department and approved by Faculty Board.

 

(i)  BOARD OF EXAMINERS FOR THE FIFTH MBBS EXAMINATION

(i)  The Board of Examiners for the Fourth MBBS examination shall consist of:

(A)  The Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences as Chairman.

(B)  The Heads of the following departments

(C)  One other member of academic staff from each department in i:i(B).

(D)  One member of the academic staff who teaches the following subjects-Therapeutics, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Radiology, Forensic Medicine, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology and Anaesthesia, not less than the rank of Senior Lecture, all appointed by Faculty Board and approves by Senate.

(E)  All External Examiners appointed by Senate.

(ii)  The role of the Board of Examiners shall be to :-

(A)  receive all examination questions

(B)  compile the Fifth Professional Examination papers

(C)  mark and moderate the script

(D)  receive viva voce reports

E)  compile final mark sheets

(F)  prepare the pass and referral lists of candidates for transmission to the Board of the Faculty of Medical Sciences

(h)  Faculty Board at the end of the Fifth MBBS Examination, shall receive the pass and referral lists from the Board of Examiners and shall compile for the approval of Senate, a list of candidates who have satisfied the requirement for the award of the MBBS degree.
