A SHORT HISTORY OF THE FACULTY

The first 100 students were admitted in October 1976 to courses leading to the first professional examination in Medicine. During he 1976/77 session the following academic staff were appointed:-

Professor A. C. Ikeme (1976) Foundation Dean; and Professor of Medicine.
Professor E. H.Olisa (1976) Professor of Pathology
Professor W. V. Weber (1977) Professor of Physiology
Dr U. P.  Isichie (1977) Reader in Human Chemistry
Dr B. Cowlishaw (1977) Senior Lecturer in Human Chemistry
Mr. T. Kay (1977) Lecturer in Community Medicine
Mrs. P. N. Otti (1976) Lecturer in Community Medicine

The teaching of courses leading to the second professional examination commenced in October 1977 under very difficult circumstances; buildings were incomplete, equipment was not available and the teaching staff were very few. There were no full-time lectures in anatomy and the department was started through the assistance of Dr Cummings and Dr Verbrugge; both full-time surgeons in Jos, and under the direction of Professor Olisa.

In 1978/79 the growth of the faculty was rapid. Staff strength doubled in the preclinical departments while a few new staff were recruited in the clinical departments. In 1979 the Nigeria Medical Council gave approval of the courses and facilities for the pre-clinical school.

A second visitation in 1980 gave provisional approval for the Murtala Mohammed Hospital to be used as a temporary teaching hospital.

The first batch of students commenced their clinical training at the Murtala Mohammed Hospital Jos in 1979. Medical graduates have been produced since 1982. One BSc (Anatomy) student has been produced. He entered the programmes as an intercalated medical student and graduated in October 2003. The first set of BSc (Biochemistry) graduates are expected in 2004.
